Rare crab species found for first time in Taiwan
A rare crab species新紀錄種 小琉球發現楊梅蟹

A rare crab species named actumnus digitalis has been discovered in Taiwan. This is the first time that the species has ever been spotted in the country.

According to a team led by Professor of geography Lo Liu-chih at National Kaohsiung Normal University, the red-colored crab with two thumb-like front legs was found in an intertidal zone on Xiaoliuqiu, a coral islet off Pingtung County in southern Taiwan. The team said the discovery of the species brought the number of crab species on the only coral islet of Taiwan to 113.

The team said so far, only two of the actumnus digitalis have been found on Xiaoliuqiu, so the crab is rare and valuable.
