1)

The top stories from this past week were connected to the devastating explosions that rocked the southern city of Kaohsiung on July 31st, killing 30 and injuring more than 300.

Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu has offered an apology following the explosions, which were caused by a gas leak.

After the incident, the Kaohsiung City Government said it did not know about the gas pipelines, which belonged to the LCY Chemical Corp. But local media said that the Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit system had records that mentioned the pipelines in 2012.

Chen offered an apology, saying that there was a breakdown in communication within the city government.

Also this past week, Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu accepted the resignation of four city officials following the explosions.

One of the city’s deputy mayors and the officials in charge of public works, water resources, and the city’s metro system have all tendered their resignations.

On Friday, Chen said that she had accepted the resignations, but they would only take effect once the disaster relief is complete.

3)

And finally this past week, a new education minister, Wu Se-hwa, took office, replacing Chiang Wei-ling, who resigned because of an academic scandal.

In a ceremony on Wednesday, Wu said he would seek to invest limited resources where they are needed most. He also pledged to be more inclusive when trying to find solutions to problems within Taiwan’s education system.
