First Taiwanese team reaches Broad Peak summit
Mountaineer with a pedigree

Three climbers from Taiwan have reached the summit of Broad Peak — the 12th highest mountain in the world. This is the first time that climbers from Taiwan have succeeded in conquering the mountain, which straddles the Pakistani-Chinese border.

One of the climbers, Chang Yuan-chih, became the youngest person ever to climb the Aconcagua Peak in South America seven years ago at the age of 18. He said he and his teammate have been training for over a year for this climb, and the nice weather also made it easier for them to reach the peak.

"I actually climbed this mountain three years ago in 2011, but didn’t manage to get to the top. So this year I wanted to try and conquer the mountain and also to challenge myself again," said Chang. "I’m very happy we reached the peak this time. I am now more confident in climbing and feel like I have had a breakthrough," he said.

It took the team nearly a month to climb Broad Peak, which stands more than 8,000 meters above sea level. They had previously tried to get to the top in 2011 and 2012.
