Four elementary school students from the eastern county of Taitung have won two gold and two bronze medals in the final competition of the World Mathematics Invitation (WMI) that concluded last week.
The final competition of the 2014 WMI, the first international math competition organized by Taiwan-based associations, was held in the southern city of Kaohsiung on Aug. 9-13. Participants included students from kindergarten and grade 1 to grade 12 students from Taiwan, Malaysia, China, the Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong, South Korea, the United States, and Indonesia.
The four Taiwanese medalists are a grade 6 student and three grade 4 students. They are among a group of selected students in Taitung County who have received special math training from the Chen-Li Educational Foundation in Taiwan.
The WMI brings together institutes and organizations worldwide that promote mathematics. It is held in a different country every year.
The organizers say the annual competition seeks to motivate math students to raise their logical reasoning, to acquire new mathematics problem solving skills, and to experience a sense of achievement.
