The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) is set to conduct an investigation into the work performance of former Deputy Minister, Hsien-yao Chang. That’s the word from MAC Deputy Minister Wu Mei-hung on Monday.
The MAC is Taiwan’s top China policy-making body. A statement released by the MAC on Saturday said Chang was stepping down due to “family reasons.” However, Chang denied the truth of the statement a day later. In a message sent to the media, Chang said he was forced to step down as he was “not needed.”
Rumor has it that Chang was removed from his post because he did not get along well with MAC Minister Wang Yu-chi, and because the government was unhappy with his handling of a trip made by a top Chinese envoy in June.
MAC Deputy Minister Wu said the rumor is untrue.
She said the MAC will set up a taskforce to conduct an investigation into Chang’s work performance as “some suspicions need to be clarified.” However, Wu declined to give further details.
