The US Republican National Committee passed a resolution supporting Taiwan’s Peace Initiative in the East China Sea. The initiative calls on parties to put aside conflicts and settle disputes peacefully. The committee passed the resolution unanimously this month.
The resolution affirmed the party’s friendship and support of Taiwan and its commitment to safeguarding Taiwan’s freedom and democracy. It also called on the Obama administration to sell submarines, modern fighter jets, and other weapons to Taiwan.
Taiwan’s East China Sea Peace Initiative reaffirms the Republic of China’s sovereignty. The Republic of China is Taiwan’s official name. It also calls on all parties to cooperate, adhere to international laws, and to settle conflicts in the area peacefully.
The resolution called on the Obama administration to encourage countries in the South China Sea to include Taiwan in talks related to the area.
The Republican resolution will be sent to Republican Congressmen, Congressional candidates, state governors, and state headquarters.
The party’s support for this resolution follows earlier moves this year to show the Republican Party’s support for Taiwan. On January 25, the Republican Party held an event to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act and support the signing of a bilateral investment agreement. It also passed a resolution supporting Taiwan’s bid to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
