The Central Election Commission says vote counting for the 2020 election is expected to finish by 10:00pm Saturday night.
The commission says that more than half of eligible voters are registered to vote in Taiwan’s six urban special municipalities: Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung. Over 13.3 million eligible voters, or 69.27% of this year’s electorate is registered in one of these cities.
Meanwhile, the commission is telling voters what to expect when they arrive at their polling place. The commission says that voters will get three ballots.
One ballot will count their vote for president and vice president. Another will count their vote for local representatives in the legislature. Finally, the third will count votes for legislator-at-large seats. These at-large lawmakers represent a party rather than a region. Voters pick a party, and the proportion of votes each party gets will determine the number of these at-large seats they win. Indigenous voters will also fill additional legislative seats that represent their communities.
The commission says votes for president and vice president will be counted first.
Voters must arrive at polling stations by 4:00 pm.
