Two Chinese military Y-8 anti-submarine airplanes entered Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ) on Wednesday. This was the fifth intrusion of its kind since September 16.

Taiwan’s air force responded to the intrusion by scrambling jets and issuing radio warnings. It also mobilized surveillance and air defense assets. Since last week, the defense ministry has also begun posting real-time information on Chinese warplane movements.

On September 16, two Chinese Y-8s entered Taiwan's southwest ADIZ.

Then, on September 18, as US Under Secretary of State Keith Krach visited Taiwan, 18 Chinese warplanes flew into Taiwan’s ADIZ: two H-6 bombers, eight J-16 fighters, four J-11 fighters and four J-10 fighters. Twelve of these planes crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait.

On September 19, 19 Chinese warplanes flew into Taiwanese airspace: two H-6 bombers, twelve J-16 fighters, two J-11 fighters, two J-10 fighters and one Y-8 anti-submarine plane. They flew in a pincer formation, a movement designed to attack by facing the enemy in front, on both flanks, and in the rear. Some of these planes crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait. The incursion coincided with a memorial ceremony held for late President Lee Teng-hui.

On September 21, 22 and 23, 2 Y-8s entered Taiwan’s ADIZ.
