Premier calls on China to maintain regional peace

Premier Su Tseng-chang is calling on China to keep peace in the region and maintain peaceful cross-strait relations. Su was speaking Wednesday amid heightened cross-strait tensions.

China has intruded into Taiwan’s air space five times in the past seven days. Taiwan’s air force has responded by scrambling jets and issuing radio warnings.

The premier said that every response is costly, and it is likely a heavy expense for China as well.

Su said, “Taiwan has never bothered anyone, but Taiwan stands firm in protecting its land and people. We hope and call on China not to destroy regional peace and to allow the two sides of the Strait to have peaceful interaction. We hope that Taiwan can have stable development, and we believe this is better for China as well.”

The US Army’s journal, Military Review, recently published an editorial in which a US Captain in the Marine Corps said that China’s military is growing stronger and there is no way to stop China’s ambitions. He suggests that the US station forces in Taiwan as Taiwan faces this greater threat from China.
