Taiwan’s representative office in Fiji has not changed its signage to include “Taiwan,” despite an official name change more than two months ago. The Foreign Ministry says that the Fijian government has been under extreme pressure from China. The ministry did not provide further explanation, but adds that it is actively negotiating with the Fijian government and will explain more at an appropriate time.

In 2018 the Fijian government unilaterally changed the name of Taiwan’s representative office to “Taipei Trade Office in Fiji,” removing “Taiwan” from its name. Following a change of government in Fiji, it was announced in March that the office name would be reinstated to the “Trade Mission of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the Republic of Fiji.” Official diplomatic privileges were also restored at that time.

Despite these announcements, the physical signage at the office has not been changed back to its original name, though it is reflected on the office’s website.
