Taiwanese Olympic gold-medalist boxer Lin Yu-ting (林郁婷) has truly shown resilience and skill amid ongoing global criticism, inspiring the youth of Taiwan with her courage.

Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting’s (林郁婷) journey to her gold medal win at the Paris Olympics has been marred by a widely publicized ongoing controversy over her gender and eligibility.  Fortunately, she has received support and love from her fans at home.

Adorable cartoons adorn the pages of a notebook filled with praise and encouragement by the daughter of well-known National Taiwan University Hospital OB-GYN doctor Jin-Chung Shih (施景中). She writes that "[Lin’s] bravery is more precious than a gold medal,” and that she has united the Taiwanese public. Most touching is her quote of Eleanor Roosevelt saying that “A woman is like a teabag. You never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.”

Shih says how his daughter wrote about Lin learning to box at age 13 to protect her mother from domestic abuse is especially moving. She asks the reader, “Could you do that for your mother?”

A British women's rights group recently posted on social media platform X regarding Lin being tall for her weight class, saying that “Lin is male. Height advantage is a male trait.” With that and other prominent figures and groups discussing her gender, the controversy has blown up in foreign media.

Lin’s gold medal win was the best response to women's rights in the face of such a harsh examination of female identity. Shih’s daughter is just one example of how the boxer’s strength can inspire girls and women of all shapes and sizes not just in Taiwan but around the world to become even more powerful in spite of the challenges they face daily.
