On the National Day celebration, President Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) call for cross-party cooperation and unity was met with a measured response from opposition leaders. KMT Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) pointed out the need for the administration to demonstrate sincerity and respect for legislative decisions as a foundation for productive political cooperation.
Chu urged President Lai to approach national issues from a broader perspective, transcending narrow ideologies. He stressed that the opposition would support policies beneficial to the nation and its people, but also called for the administration to be responsive to resolutions agreed upon by various parties in the Legislature.
The chairman also addressed the recent controversy of Lai’s remarks about the motherland. He suggested that a reassuring stance from the president could ease both domestic and international concerns. Chu emphasized the importance of wisdom in navigating cross-strait relations to ensure peace and prosperity for the people.
Mayors of different cities, including Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) of Taipei, Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) of New Taipei, and Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) of Taichung also held a flag-raising ceremony. The leaders collectively highlighted the importance of working towards the common good of the nation, particularly in the face of recent natural disasters and geopolitical challenges.
