President Tsai Ing-wen is calling for Taiwan and the EU to negotiate a bilateral investment agreement. Tsai was speaking on Tuesday at the EU Investment Forum 2020 in Taipei.

Tsai said global economic growth is estimated to shrink 5.1% this year. Taiwan though has managed to maintain positive economic growth this year and its annual growth is predicted to be 1.56%. That’s the highest among those of the Four Asian Tigers, namely Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea.

Tsai said building up Taiwan’s investment environment will enhance Taiwan’s relations with the world. She said Taiwan and the EU are not only close investment partners, but also share common values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law.

Tsai also said Taiwan is in a position to become the EU’s important partner in information and communications technology, biotechnology, and smart mobility.
