Premier Su Tseng-chang says that the government will use rigorous testing to ensure the security of a planned electronic ID program.
The government plans to issue citizens with new electronic ID cards in July after a testing phase during January.
During a legislative hearing on Friday, however, one lawmaker expressed concerns about possible vulnerabilities in the new system. In response, Premier Su Tseng-chang says that over 100 countries in the world have digitized their national ID systems. He said that Taiwan stands on the forefront of technological innovation and should embrace electronic ID documents.
However, Su also said that the government is not taking any risks when it comes to privacy and data security. He said during the testing phase, the government will invite hackers to attempt to break into the system in order to identify weaknesses. Su says the administration will not stop until it is satisfied that the electronic ID program is completely safe.
