VIDEO: University develops device that detects blood sugar level by one’s breath
A university team develops a device that tests blood sugar level by one's breath

A new invention in Taiwan is going to make the lives of diabetics  a lot easier. A university has developed a device that can determine whether a patient’s blood sugar level is high or low by his breath.

Taiwan has more than 2 million diabetic patients. The number keeps rising though with about 25,000 people finding out they are suffering from diabetes each year.

For those who hate pricking themselves to get a drop of blood for the blood sugar test, National Taiwan Normal University’s Department of Chemistry has come to the rescue.

The university developed a technology where the patient only has to blow into the new equipment to test one’s blood sugar level. The technology takes the level of carbon dioxide from the breath to calculate to see whether one’s blood sugar level is too high or low. It can also detect any signs of early diabetes.

The equipment cannot give a numeric blood sugar level reading and it still needs to undergo more clinical tests, but the device offers hope to make the lives of diabetics a bit easier.
