A heat wave is projected for Paris in coming days and will affect Olympics spectators and athletes alike.
In anticipation of storms and high temperatures of 35 C (95 F), Météo-France has issued a weather warning for Paris and surrounding areas on Tuesday.
The heat wave originates from southern France, with very hot weather expected to impact Paris throughout the night. During the last two days of July, the temperature is not expected to drop below 22 C.
Some athletes have called for the timing of outdoor events to be adjusted due to concerns about the dangers of sustained physical activity in high temperatures. Events such as cycling and beach volleyball in particular are quite strenuous and could put athletes at risk of heat stroke.
The competitors aren’t the only ones trying to stay cool. Spectators were seen enjoying cold drinks and frozen treats, or taking refuge in the shade of trees outside the arena. As the games in Paris heat up, summer temperatures are doing much the same.
