Badminton star Tai Tzu-ying’s (戴資穎) last hurrah at the Olympic Games ended in tears after a showdown that saw Tai lose to her old rival Ratchanok Intanon from Thailand.

While the defeat was one which ended Tai’s Olympic career, Tai and Intanon gave one another a hug after the game in a show of good sportsmanship.

Tai expressed regret at not being able to pull out a win, but grateful to be able to finish her last Olympic match despite being injured. Education Ministry Sports Director-General James Cheng (鄭世忠) and her fans voiced their distress watching Tai play while in pain.

Tai has fans from across the world, some of which flew to Paris just to watch her play. One of those fans from Hong Kong said that she was confident Tai would make it into the top 8, so she bought tickets accordingly. Despite not being able to watch her play, she says she’s supported her since 2016 and will continue to love her.

Dr. Cheng thanked Tai for playing on behalf of Taiwan for so many years, saying that he hopes her legacy can help inspire other athletes to follow in her footsteps.
