Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) criticized China’s misleading interpretation of UN Resolution 2758 in an op-ed published in Japan’s Sankei Shimbun on Monday. He called for a correction of China’s claim that Taiwan is part of China and for the inclusion of Taiwan in the UN and the UN system.

In the op-ed, Lin emphasizes that the resolution only addresses China’s representation at the UN. It does not state that Taiwan is a part of China nor authorize China to represent Taiwan within the UN system. He says that China’s distortion of the resolution to support its “One China Principle” is part of a broader strategy to undermine Taiwan’s rights and justify potential military actions against the island nation. Lin urges for Taiwan’s inclusion in the UN and support for Taiwan’s rightful participation in international organizations.

The 79th UN General Assembly will convene in New York on Tuesday, local time. Lin believes that failing to correct China's misinterpretation could threaten peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and Indo-Pacific region. He says that China’s expansionist mindset extends beyond Taiwan and calls for the UN and the international community to not only reiterate their concerns about Beijing’s coercive actions but also collaborate to prevent its unlawful behavior. He says the upcoming assembly provides an opportunity to address regional security challenges and support global economic stability.
