Paraguayan ambassador to Taiwan Carlos José Fleitas Rodríguez led a delegation to the Legislature on Thursday, affirming the strong bilateral relations between Paraguay and Taiwan during meetings with Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), Deputy Speaker Johnny Chiang (江啟臣), and other cross-partisan lawmakers.
In his remarks, Han stated that Taiwan and Paraguay have maintained diplomatic relations for 67 years, with their friendship remaining strong. He highlighted that many Paraguayan students receive high-tech education in Taiwan, fostering fruitful exchanges in the educational field. Han also noted that these academic exchanges will not only lead to significant advancements in technology for the students but will also enhance the emotional ties between the two sides. He expressed hope for closer academic collaboration in the future.
Fleitas conveyed his honor in representing the Paraguayan government and relayed greetings from President Santiago Peña Palacios. He emphasized that Paraguay and Taiwan share values of justice, freedom, and the rule of law, and that standing on the right side of history involves defending Taiwan's democracy. Fleitas stated that by doing so, Paraguay is also affirming its commitment to democracy worldwide. He reiterated to President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) that the relationship between Paraguay and Taiwan is rock-solid, built on shared democratic values, cooperation, and friendship.
